The Slow Holler Tarot

You are in the cave. Deep in the dark of it. It’s where you must be until you get what you came for. Luckily, you’ve got the bare essentials that you need to survive. It might not look like much, but the light of the fire is life-giving. It is life-force! It’s all you have, but it’s all you need.

The Six of Swords is here moving you to a new land. I can tell you’ve been through some knives-type life lately. The battles have landed you here in this dark place, alone, looking at the skeletons of you. These selves died with knives where breath should have been. But you’re not going out like that anymore. You can see all of that for what it was and is, and you can take the knives that ring true and drive yourself to safer seas because you deserve that calm, nourishing water that sails smooth and offers generous and gentle breeze for your lungs.

You are Persephone. You have come down into the underworld (of your own volition – don’t get it twisted) because there were some ghosts you needed to meet. And, turns out, some fruit you needed to eat to understand that the darkness, too, refreshes your blood and that possibility flowing through your veins tastes sweet. And you can take it with you.

So, into the cave where the shadows and skeletons haunt. Light a fire down here so you can see the fruit. Eat what you can and leave the rest for the rats. Just don’t leave without you. The dark and the light of you. All one.

TAURUS

Bitter Water

Next World Tarot, 2017, Cristy C. Road/Croadcore

Taurus, it’s Cancer season, and things are about to get muddy! I pulled three cards to help you plan your path through it all.

Something to invite in: Page of Swords

The Pages are the kids of the Tarot, and this kiddo is the original idealist. My culture has a lot of negative images of children and doesn’t see ‘childishness” as anything to aspire to; maybe yours is similar. But the child in my life is small and sharp and brilliant, like a diamond, and she has a vast, gorgeous imagination. What would it be like to get in touch with your child-self? What could you imagine, for yourself and this world, if you believed that none of this is inevitable? Let yourself be wild and new and sharp.

Something to let go of: Three of Pentacles

The Three of Pentacles is inviting you to create some breathing space between you and your collective so that you can reconnect with who you are as an individual. Your role in your team is just one part of who you are, and you can get lost in it. What collectives or teams are you part of? What roles do you play? Where have you gotten disconnected from your values or needs or longings? How can you find the shape of yourself again? Get curious about that, and let the collective take care of itself for a while.

Guiding star: Temperance

Your guiding star in this work is balance. You don’t have to throw out all your adult experience, but you need to allow your child-self the space to imagine something different. You don’t have to abandon your collective, but you need to attend to your connection with yourself, in part to give you a place from which to connect authentically with others. Practice holding two separate truths without reconciling or harmonizing them, and see where that takes you.

You got this, Taurus, and I’m cheering for you!

GEMINI

Meg

The Fountain Tarot, 2014 Jonathan Saiz, Jason Gruhl & Andi Torado, www.fountaintarot.com

Cancer season is one of emotion, intuition, and care, a chance to regroup after the endless movement and powerful collaboration of Gemini. With so many plans developing, energy buzzing and creativity bubbling, Cancer season invites us to retreat, to process, to carefully and deliberately honor our needs and emotions. As momentum builds with work, this is a time to listen to our intuition and put our energy into projects and passions that reflect the core of who we are. Cancer season can feel particularly volatile for many of us, with emotions quickly changing and self-care becoming essential – take these weeks ahead to breathe and listen, to choose work wisely and withdraw when necessary. And after buzzing through your own season, Gemini, it may feel particularly challenging to slow down and process everything you’ve imagined.

Cancer’s birth card is the Chariot, an archetype of intense movement, deep passion, and powerful focus. We’ve spent the previous season with the Lovers, finding balance and honoring the freedom that we’ve found within, and now is the time to share that confidence with the world. And while this card clearly ties to motivation and progress, we also find exhilaration, courage, and empowerment. When we tap into the needs and desires that drive us, honoring our intuition and trusting our hearts to lead us forward, everything becomes possible, and we discover a sense of clarity and personal power that helps us move with joy. We know exactly where we’re going, and have a rich, deep vision of the person we are becoming.

Your main card for this season is the ace of pentacles, a card of rich beginnings, slow growth, and a new start. Perhaps one of the fresh ideas buzzing in your mind seems particularly alluring, or instead it feels like the right time to revisit an old project. Whatever the opportunity, this is your chance to put down roots, build a solid foundation, and begin investing your time and energy into one specific vision. This is not always an easy feat for you, as someone that prefers to juggle multiple projects and ideas, but this seed has endless potential to shape your future and manifest powerful magic and resources in the months and years ahead.

Your clarification card is the seven of wands, a card of standing defiant, knowing your purpose, being willing to be alone in your truth. As you focus on one project, make sure it’s one that speaks to the core of who you are, reflects your values, honors your deepest needs and desires and vision for the future. Beginning this new journey with patience and perseverance may require you to defend your choices or work alone for a time, so be sure to carefully consider what’s ahead, and to put your energy into work that matters deeply.

Happy Cancer season!

CANCER

mack

The Wild Unknown Tarot by Kim Krans (Harper Collins) &
The Herbal Healing Deck by Baldwin & Verkamp (Schiffer).

cancer sun
TWO OF WANDS
cancer suns, your solar return expresses itself as the heat of summer in the northern hemisphere & the depth of winter in the southern hemisphere. take these two powerful expressions of mother earth that exist inside of you & use them to your advantage. it is time for you to begin new projects, work toward sustaining them, and to dream big about the abundance that awaits you. the north node of the moon is in your sign from 2018-2020 — use this beautiful transit by trusting your intuition and nourishing your sparks of vision. you are at the threshold of a new adventure.

cancer rising
DAUGHTER OF WANDS [R]
cancer rising friends, you are being invited to view the contents of your inner shell. get excited about the magic you can make on the inside. as the sun moves through your first house this month, you are urged to tend to your own dreams. whisper sweet nothings into your own ear. start with the visions behind your eyelids then work outward from there. you have a sweet and powerful message on the tip of your tongue. look within for your spark, bask in its light, & then share it with the world.

cancer moon
NINE OF SWORDS [R]
my heart goes out to you, cancer moons. your delicate hearts have been heavy this year as a large number of planets have been challenging you to face your subconscious. alas, it is not easy to grow a thick skin, nor is it simple to work from the inside out. yet our bodies’ health depends on maintaining equilibrium and boundaries. your wide range of emotions paired with your sharp intuition is a gift not known or understood by everyone. but do not let your own or others’ emotions get in the way of you claiming mental peace. you are allowed to sleep soundly at night. if your mind floats to the past or the pain, bring yourself back to the present with simple reminders of gratitude.

herbal ally
BLACK COHOSH | DARKNESS
all cancer placements, your herbal ally for this season is black cohosh. this ally supports you in seeking refuge in the darkness. the sign of cancer rules the quiet and private places that allow us to feel safe and held. cancer knows that darkness is intrinsically safe because life is born from it. black cohosh is an ally that offers its subterranean roots for use in pain management, showing us that darkness is an asset in addressing our pain. growing upward from the dark soil, its delicate white flowers appear on tall spires that look like angel wands. when we confront the darkness, our light can bloom.

LEO

Chosen Eyes

Riter-Waite tarot

6 of wands, 3 of swords, 3 or wands and 7 of wands (all inverted)

My Fiery Lions,

What do you think you’re doing? I mean seriously, what is it that you believe you’re conveying through your actions because in many ways a few things may be getting lost in translation. It’s like a child trying to get attention through misbehaving: sure you get ATTENTION, but is it the healthiest form of attention? NO! True, you have had many disappointments, a few setbacks and a lot of false accusations hurled your way as of late and over the years… but acting in the lowest form of yourself is soooo not the way to go with this. During this time, don’t do ANYTHING that involves fitting into the crowd or being the center of anyone else’s attention – IT WILL BACK FIRE! This is not the time to be a part of idle gossip and petty chattering, nor is it that time to be seen on EVERYONE’S radar. Now is the time to plot your course and move in silence while the world goes by in its own haze a craziness. This version of the world is not truly going to make sense or resonate with you for a little while, but I believe you will begin to grow quite fond of it in the end for it is NECESSARY! This moment will feel very isolating at first but will prove therapeutic in the end for it allows you to see/access deeper parts of your truer self and highest desires. Now is not the time for slipping up and allowing others to confuse you. He has to find ways of choosing yourself over others in a non-spiteful, selfish (BUT HEALTHY and diplomatic) fashion. Allow people to be who and what they are, and learn from the growing pains; true friends and supporters will be there in the end. At the end of all this, your compass will be reset, and you’ll be off and running! Just be sure to use this time of cultivation WISELY as it won’t come again in bulk for a while. Know who you are, what your boundaries are, and how far you are willing to bend in all directions. You’re worth waiting for! #keepyourgazesforward

VIRGO

Abbie

Holly Simple,  2017, Slow Holler Tarot Deck: 2016

Virgo: your keywords for the season is action. You may tend to get too far into your head, to think that everything needs to be just right before you can take any action. But that’s not what cancer season is about for you. You’ve been percolating on something for a long time, and it’s time to bring it out into the light and move forward on it. Out of all the water signs, Cancer is like the rushing river. It is Cardinal, steadfast, determined. Cancer leads with the heart and brings us into alignment between heart and action.

But what project are you supposed to activate? Awakening, key 20, is about waking from the slumber and finally seeing everything click into place. This is the overarching theme of the work that you’ve been doing for years. This is that passion project that is ready to take flight, that project that is deeply entwined with your core identity. You are in new terrain and more powerful and certain than ever before. This is a point of no return. Take this season as the opportunities for rebirth renewal and revival that it is. This also means that it’s time for you to face your inner demons and find an answer for them in ways that you have not before. Whether those demons are perfectionism, self-doubt, trauma, mental illness, poverty, oppression, now is the time to face truths about them and to deal with them. Because what you’re working on it so closely tied to your identity, now is the time of reckoning with these darker aspects of yourself.

The good news is that you’re supported by the Visionary of Stones. You have learned how to be the rock that supports yourself and others, which means that even as you’re going through the earth-shattering changes, you’ll be able to keep one foot firmly placed on the ground. The visionary of stones is unique in that they see the full picture and are dreamers, but they’re also practical and understand the steps that need to be taken to get things done. If there’s someone in your life who is also a Visionary of Stones now is a very good time to check in with him and perhaps even collaborate with them on this project.

Finally, a way to get things done: the Student of Knives. If you were supported by the Visionary of Stones, the Student of Knives is here to show you how to accomplish your goals. The trick is to learn how to communicate the knowledge that you have gained – and not to get too distracted. The most important thing that this card tells me is that you have been honing this idea and working on it for a long time perhaps even years and now you need to begin communicating your ideas and making them the real world. You need to bring others into the fold, but clearly communicate your vision so that it doesn’t get distorted. Good luck, Virgo! You got this.

LIBRA

Cameron

The Dark Mansion Tarot, Art by Magdalena Kaczan, Published by Taroteca Studio 2018 taroteca-studio.com

Hi Libra,
The cards I pulled for you for Cancer season are the Knight of Pentacles and the King of Cups. So despite the reputation of Cancer season of being somewhat emotionally volatile, it looks like you’ll have a pretty mellow time of it so long as you stay focused on whatever tasks you have at hand, rather than getting caught up in the emotional maelstrom.

The Knight of Pentacles is indicating a very productive, but slow-moving energy for the next month, so if you have projects that you’ve meant to get to or new routines that you’ve wanted to establish, then now is a good time. Don’t expect things to come together quickly though and don’t expect things to suddenly take off (wait on Leo season for that). You need to be patient right now. This is a slow burn energy, so take your time, take things in small steps, and savor things as you’re doing them. You don’t need to rush. This slow moving energy is a gift. It’s sacred permission to take your time. Larger or longer-term projects will particularly benefit from this energy, so if you’ve been wanting to finally start writing that novel or working on that degree program or anything of that scope, you’ll be energetically supported.

The King of Cups advises that you maintain your emotional boundaries and retain sovereignty over your emotional journey, even while you’re supporting others. This period of the astrological calendar is infamous for being a time when buried things bubble to the surface and demand to be dealt with, so you may find yourself inundated with friends and family looking for emotional support. Be mindful of how much of yourself you give away this season. Libra tends to be the mediator of the zodiac, but that impulse to intervene could cause you to overextend yourself, or even step on someone else’s growth. This King, while he enjoys supporting others and certainly has the wisdom and emotional intelligence to do so, is also mindful of when it’s appropriate to help and when it’s best to step back. Embody his wisdom as you interact with your community this month. Consider when it’s best to help and consider when it’s best to focus on your personal growth and allow others to do the same.

Wishing you smooth sailing on the Cancer seas,
-Cameron

SCORPIO

Steph

Slow Holler (2017) Published by Slow Holler

Dear Scorpio, welcome to Cancer season.

Unsurprisingly for you, this month the vibes are very…watery.

This month will hold some important lessons to you about your relationship to your emotions, your intuition, your creativity, and your inner world. Cancer season is asking you to approach the big feelings it brings (to which you are no stranger), with open-heartedness and lightness. Ebb and flow with your feelings with a gentle and sweet curiosity, but try not to spiral. Instead, pay attention to the sweet gifts and magic that your emotions and intuition are bringing you this month. What if you were as attentive to the joyful feelings as you are to the painful ones? Stay soft, open, and receptive, and see what gorgeous things may surface from within you.

How can you integrate this medicine, Scorpio? The message here is simple – allow yourself to feel your way through it without strain and without storyline. Tune into the desires of your heart and attend to them. Tap into the forces that connect all of us and feel at home there. Practically speaking, this Cancer season is a good time for you to direct your emotional energy into creating. What is it that your heart is asking you to create? What is it that brings you contentment and joy? Put simply, this month, make something that makes you happy. Make something that heals you. Make something that heals the world. But don’t take any of it too seriously.

Lastly, this month, you are being asked to leave some things behind. You are being asked to shed some old scales. Ask yourself – what are the things that stop you from choosing yourself? What is throwing you off balance and causing you to deny yourself the joy of pursuing your heart’s desires? These are the things that you will be leaving behind in Cancer season, Scorpio. Know that these pieces can’t come with you into Leo season, so it is time to say your goodbyes and release them into the depths of Cancer season.

SAGITTARIUS

Siobhan

Prisma Visions Tarot by James R. Eads 20178

In this card pull, Sagittarians share a theme card. But each of the three kinds of Sagittarius, those born at the first decan or the first ten degrees of the sign, sorta like the first ten days, those born at the second ten and the third each have a card for how to work with this theme. Don’t know what decan you are? Here’s a decan calculator.

We’re heading into eclipse season. In particular, July 2nd there is a solar eclipse at 10 degrees in Cancer and July 16th a lunar eclipse at 24 degrees Capricorn.

Members of my site may remember an Eclipse Season Checklist/spread from last year. Useful for those learning astrology or tarot if you’d like to consider how this season might affect you. Read more about why eclipses matter here or join my site to see me geeking about it in the archives.

Cancer Season Theme | Ten of Swords

Nobody wants to see the Ten of Swords. When we’re in pain, or even when we think we might face pain, our first thought is to bounce, back away, or hide. Some of us avoid difficult decisions, conversations, and anything that challenges the way we’ve always viewed the world. Some of us aren’t avoiding but live with a painful reality, health issues, or generational trauma, for example.

It’s worth noting that these two groups of folks may not be mutually exclusive. For many of us, it paid (pays) to bounce at the right time. It’s worth visiting whether you believe that you can contain all the feels associated with difficult times. It’s worth practicing being with all versions of you, the one who can watch it unfold, the one that is overwhelmed or angry, the one who feels victimized, and the one who feels powerful and brave.

You may not be able to change the hard parts, but you can make space for, and accept, all of you. You can only do your best. You are the only one who knows what that looks like.

Note that the attacker’s head is cut off in this card.

What if the attacker is irrelevant? You may not be used to turning away from the story of what grips you. Consider that you might find healing focusing on just your experience even when your instinct is to turn away.

First decan Sagittarius fam, the Six of Chalices speaks of the immense power of your imagination. We use past experience to interpret the present and to decide the acceptable conditions for feeling other emotions. This card invites you to own and explore what is your criteria for feeling peace? With choice, your emotions can be the palette with which you create a vibrant future. Without it, we are imprisoned to one path with only one acceptable way to feel.

Second decan Sagittarius, the Seven of Chalices also explores the way we “image” the world, as in with dreams and perception. This card is a reminder that multitasking not meant for humans. Feeling, doing, and noticing are all tasks. It’s not always easy or possible to do them all at the same time and when we can’t, it may be hard for us to see our way to the dynamic truth. Not “one-true-way” truth, but a flexible thing, the “truth right now.” It can be hard to find endings and beginnings when we are too class to our process about it.

Third decan Sagittarius friends, this Two of Wands is a human beginning. It’s asking that you step outside the emotional soup and move. The microcosm of your inner landscape is deeply connected to the macrocosm of all-that-is. You have a place in the world. Your emotions have a place. Step forward and feel yourself a part of the world again.

Sagittarius, it’s time for an inner journey. You are no stranger to it. In fact, you may be sick of it. The track will repeat until you embody the most relevant messages.

CAPRICORN

Jennifer

The Herbcrafter’s Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert & Latisha Guthrie.
Publisher: U.S. Games Systems, Inc.

Capricorn, your affirmation for this month is, “Truth allows me to mold my life in the image of self-love.”

Dear Capricorn, Cancer season will usher in a time of truth-telling that, while sobering, will breath new life into your heart. As the season turns from Spring to Summer in the Northern Hemisphere, much is laid bare before you. There are truths, many of which may be challenging to breathe in, being revealed to you that will provide just the clarity you need to make more self-loving decisions. This is a time of both discernment and healing. Cancer season is the clearing of the air you need to take a deeper breath in your life, mend old pain, and celebrate the power of your heart to deepen the love you have for yourself.

Your allies this month are the Seven of Air: Eucalytpus, the Curandera (King) of Air: Rosemary, and The Empress: Rose.

The Seven of Air in the Herbcrafter’s Tarot gifts you the medicine of eucalyptus, a flowering tree often used to heal the lungs. Our lungs, which remarkably look like the branches of a tree, are our breathing organs. In many traditional decks, the Seven of Swords (Air) is an invitation to notice hidden motives or motivations. Where are you hiding or running away? Even when we need strong boundaries and space away from situations that feel unsafe, it takes immense energy to hide. There can often be a feeling of guarded vigilance with this archetype. It’s so difficult to exhale deeply when we are waiting with bated breath for something unfair to happen – whether it’s finding out the truth about another or others finding out the truth about us. We see the remedy in the Seven of Air. Whether it’s extracting yourself from a treacherous relationship or situation, you cannot afford to hold your breath any longer. Breathe in the truth and let it clear the air so that you can finally take a deep cleansing breath and come out of self-protective hiding.

With the truth in hand, you can aim up in a positive optimistic direction – just as the Curandera of Air holds Rosemary up to the sky in the image above. According to the Herbcrafter’s Tarot, the gift of rosemary is “enhanced cognitive function.” Truth gives us the ability not only see clearly but to make better decisions because we have more information available to us. Truth can be just the sharp tool we need to carve our path forward. It helps us right size our expectations and understanding of what is possible. Holding truth in our hands, we do not have to be guided or swayed by the fear of the unseen or unknown but can rather point the arrow of our minds in a peaceful and loving direction. Know that the clarity you receive will help you to more easily tell yourself, and others, what you need and want, without mincing your words.

So what does all this truth telling gift you? It will gift you the ability to discern and make decisions from a renewed place of self-love. The Empress offers not only the gifts of love and compassion she also reignites creativity and passion. When you can’t breathe, you can’t inhale love or inspiration. The archetypal mother wants you to flourish and she knows that you need a loving and spacious internal environment for that to happen. The lungs and heart sit together in the ribcage. They are partners. Likewise, you can view truth and love as partners that allow you to not only inhale love and inspiration but to exhale and breath your own life force energy, to leave your mark, on what matters to you. Mold your world with your truth.

Capricorn, let truth set you free during Cancer season. Let it reveal to you the clarity hiding beneath the truth. Allow clarity to become your arrow. Aim it to the sky. Nourish it with your breath, your life-force energy. Exhale into trust. The world needs your loving presence, fully and without a vigilant veil hiding any aspect of the magnificence of you.

AQUARIUS

Kyra

The Wildwood Tarot – John Matthews & Mark Ryan with art by Will Worthington (c) 2011

Cancer season can be a difficult one for you Aquarius. It has a reputation for being an emotional time, something you are known for shying away from, but that also tends to be where the deepest work lies. Through finding your joy and accessing your inner wisdom, you can navigate the watery depths of this season.

The Page of Arrows serves as a reminder of your determination and ability to cut through the mist to get to the heart of the matter. You have a great capacity for wisdom, don’t forget that. Sometimes it’s better to sit back and watch things play out before deciding what action to take, and once you take action, you have the willpower to see things through. Trust your inner wisdom.

And of course, we’re being asked to dive into some of our darker emotions with the 3 of Arrows. Heartbreak comes in many forms; it doesn’t necessarily mean within the context of a relationship. It can be from a broken dream, from the loss of a job, from the loss of a loved one, the list goes on. It’s more than okay to mourn, but it’s also important to make sure that it doesn’t turn into jealousy. It’s hard in this social media age, where comparison is rampant, to look at our lives and not feel like we’re missing something. Instead of focussing your energy outwards, turn inward instead. This is a good season to count your blessings, no matter how mundane or small they might seem.

And to end things on a high note, we have The Sun of Life. This is such a joyous card, filled with the boundless potential of life. Let the light of the sun spill into the shadows of your life and energize your spirit. If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, we’re entering the throes of summer, enjoy it while it’s still here. If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, winter is just coming to an end, find the joy in the returning life and light. Regardless of where you are, find the light in your life and bask in its glory.

Ooh Pisces, are you ever poised to experience a surge of creative energy! 2019 has been a challenging year so far, asking you to examine everything that’s beyond your control, forcing you to take meditative pauses and turn to your Higher Self when the going gets the toughest – but in so doing. You’ve subconsciously been training yourself for what’s rushing in now: a huge leveling up in your skills and abilities, and increased clarity surrounding what has been feeling so very overwhelming for you.

Indeed, keep turning to your spiritual tools, be they meditation, yoga, study, art – those very parts of your reality are the keys to what’s next for you. You are in the process of uncovering an amazing opportunity, a universal blessing, one you’ve been aware of for a while but couldn’t put your finger on because so much else was going on and clouding your vision. The recent Full Moon in Sagittarius helped to illuminate the direction things are taking, and you’re ready to find a practical balance to fully step into your power, in such a way that you’ll be able to share your gifts with others in amazing ways! Keep dreaming, keep playing, and take good care, because you’ll need all your strength and energy for what’s on the horizon – but you are so, so prepared, and can feel excited for the good things to come <3<3
